Training Cockatiels

Whoever said you can't teach an old dog new tricks was not 100% completely correct. My lab that I rescued from a shelter is now training in obedience and doing very nicely. But, I have to say that, with parrots, retraining their brains may not be the only problem. Dogs have domesticated over the years. No bird is yet domesticated. That is, they are still exotic. We parrot owners have two things working against us in training our birds.

The first thing is that birds still have the innate instincts of their relatives in the wild. Thus, they react on instict. The next thing is that parrots do not have the drive to "impress" their owners. I find that cockatiels, like dogs, are pack animals. Establishing dominance over your bird is probably the most important training a bird can do. I have seen too many birds go into shelters or get rehomed for lack of understanding how birds think. Areas like feather plucking, screaming, and other distructive habits can be curbed when you correct your parrots in the right way.

Advanced training is available but I do not have expertise in this area. I have talked to so many training experts out there that will tell you "I can train your bird in 2 days!". WRONG! I recently received a copy of a book from birdtricks.com. I contacted Chet, the trainer and owner of birdtricks.com and he does really have the comprehension of how parrots think. So, if anyone is interested, I have offered it to my blog readers below.

Training System

In my newsletter, I'll continue on with some great training tips and some communication stories.

Thanks all!

Good luck!

New! Cockatiel Plus! newsetter. Free Trial

In my 12 years of breeding and keeping cockatiels, I have let my curious nature get the most of me. I have constantly strived to question why some cockatiels do things and how to live harmoniously with these beautiful birds! In the process, I've learned lessons the hard way: by experience.

Many articles on breeding and owning cockatiels is for FREE on the internet. Yet, I find these articles just touch the surface of subjects and I find that they are "dumbed down" for those less intelligent pet owners. But, I think even the pet owner of one cockatiel should know the tricks of the cockatiel breeders. They should have great information to arm themselves with. Instead, most are written to make the owner feel "good" not to give them information.

For a limited time, I'm offering a free trial to my newsletter as a thank you to those who will help me through the initial stages and give me feedback on what YOU want to see. I am tailoring this newsletter for YOU. It will be the good, the bad, and the ugly of breeding and managing cockatiels. I hope by writing these extensive articles that I can share with your my success: both on the show bench, in the breeding aviary, and as a pet owner.

The offer is ONLY valid until August 15th, 2006 and as a special gift for the first fifty members I will send you my COMPLETE recipe book that has recipes for breeding and for pets. This ebook I have sold on Ebay for over $10! These recipes were written by some of the largest breeders in aviculture and I have tried all of them with my birds!
